Vols 1-2 were good. Nice lighthearted fun. Obviously the animation/storytelling was scuffed as hell, but it was funny and the fights looked cool. I was surprised at how Vol 4 wasn't terrible given Monty died, and some of the fight scenes were actually pretty good. But volumes 5-6 were awful. 5 was so bad that I literally felt sick watching it.
Lost interest after volume 8. Twice actually - once the first time I watched it, a second time on rewatch. I think it's because what I liked about early RWBY, the odd humour and the fights, just wasn't there anymore. It basically became another mediocre anime.
About the Ruby homophobia thing - I watched the clip and it's funny but seems overblown. People say weird shit like that in fights, it doesn't really mean anything.
Had no idea that there was that much controversy in RT's late days - I remember lettergate and Monty's death, but I had no idea about the Vic Mig stuff or Miles leaving (????). Honestly sad to read.
RWBY’s main issue was always the lore building and how everything either didn’t feel fleshed out enough or many important characters and story elements were just left to just be abandoned. Even if the fight scenes could sometimes measure up to Monty’s work from Vol 1-3, problems with the story telling and universe lore didn’t seem to go away.
The reasons for why the anti-gay Ruby memes took off were a combination of the frustrations felt by fans and critics of the writing and how the shipping side of the fandom sort of made this paring of Blake and Yang (called “Bumblebee”) become true even as it didn’t really make sense with how both characters had been (often badly) written. Fandom shipping can be quite a nasty thing.
The scene of Ruby finally snapping after everything going wrong had this context: she and the group had seen her plans go up in smoke and being trapped in a “Alice in Wonderland” like dimension was taking a toll on her and she had enough of putting up a façade that everything was going to be alright. Her ranting at her sister and Blake was more about how they spent more time caring for each other rather than focusing on how to fix their current situation and said it in a uncharacteristically sarcastic way: “Maybe even finally get our feelings sorted out. Good for you, by the way. We are all so HAPPY for you!”
Of course out of context, people decided to meme this scene and use much harsher words to make it seem like Ruby’s frustration was with their lesbianism. Partly because of how bad the show had become and Ruby could also serve as the voice for the jokes people could make about those kinds of relationships.
I actually saw some of my friends and mutual’s tweets and posts go viral a year ago with those memes.
Rooster Teeth’s demise is another story of many online entertainment companies that go belly up once they reach a certain size and then proceed to become much of the very things they want to not be.
I reviewed RWBY recently.
